Shipping from Mumbai or JNPT and not sure whether to book a full container or share one? Here is how FCL and LCL differ, what affects the cost, and how to choose.

If you ship goods from Mumbai or JNPT (Nhava Sheva), one of the first decisions your sea freight forwarder will ask about is whether to book a full container or share one. The choice affects your cost, your transit time and the risk to your cargo, so it is worth understanding before you ask for quotes.

What is FCL?

FCL stands for Full Container Load. You book an entire container, usually 20 ft or 40 ft, and only your goods go inside. The container is loaded at your factory or warehouse, sealed, and stays sealed until it reaches the destination.

FCL suits you when:

  • You have enough cargo to fill most of a container
  • Your goods are fragile, high value or sensitive to handling
  • You want more control over loading and timing

What is LCL?

LCL stands for Less than Container Load. Your cargo shares a container with goods from other shippers. Your forwarder consolidates the shipments at a Container Freight Station (CFS), and the cargo is separated again at the destination.

LCL suits you when:

  • Your shipment is too small to fill a container
  • You ship smaller quantities more often
  • You want to avoid paying for empty space

FCL vs LCL: the main differences

  • Cost: FCL is priced per container. LCL is usually priced by volume or weight, whichever is higher, so you pay only for the space you use.
  • Transit time: LCL usually takes longer because cargo has to be consolidated before departure and separated after arrival.
  • Handling: LCL cargo is handled more, at the CFS on both ends, which increases the chance of delay or damage. FCL is loaded once and sealed.
  • Flexibility: LCL lets you ship small quantities without waiting to fill a container.

Which one is cheaper?

It depends on your volume. For small shipments, LCL is almost always cheaper, because you are not paying for the whole container. As your volume grows, a point comes where booking a full container costs about the same as, or less than, LCL for the same cargo. Many shippers find this point at roughly 10 to 15 cubic metres, but the exact figure changes with rates, route and season. Ask your forwarder to quote both options for your shipment.

What else affects sea freight cost?

  • Port of loading and destination port
  • Type of cargo, including dangerous or temperature-controlled goods
  • Season and carrier capacity
  • Fuel and other surcharges
  • Port, CFS and documentation charges at both ends
  • Customs clearance and transport to the port

When you compare quotes, look at every line, not just the total. Our guide to choosing a freight forwarding company in Mumbai lists the questions to ask.

Documents you will need

For both FCL and LCL, your forwarder usually needs:

  • Commercial invoice and packing list
  • Details of the shipper and consignee
  • Importer Exporter Code (IEC) for commercial shipments
  • Any licence or certificate required for your product

Customs clearance is a separate step. Read how to choose a customs clearance agent in Mumbai and JNPT before your cargo arrives.

How to decide

  1. Measure your cargo volume and weight.
  2. Ask your forwarder for both FCL and LCL quotes.
  3. Compare the total cost, including charges at both ports.
  4. Think about timing: if you need the goods quickly, FCL is usually safer.
  5. Consider the value and fragility of the cargo.
